Iron Man/X-O Manowar In Heavy Metal

History

Console to PC conversions have become rampant with new titles with which their marketing genius' want to "leverage their assets." All this leveraging leads to a preponderance of conversions of even old and bad titles as well as new powerful titles. We all must learn to take the good with the bad.

Acclaim has produced many movie license titles as side scrollers such as Judge Dredd, Batman, and Dragonheart. Unfortunately, most of these movie license games are bad or mediocre examples of the better side scrollers, with nothing new to add. Movie and comic book licenses do not guarentee the game will be good. If you liked the movie or comic, it does not mean that the game is anything like the real thing.

Iron Man, a Marvel comic book hero, was killed off in his series. Iron Man was an older man, being a Korean war vetran turned super hero. The dead Iron Man was replaced by a new recruit in the series. X-O Manowar, a Valient comics hero, has died and according to the company will not return to the series. It is not auspicious to start a video game with two dead heroes.

Company Line

THIS IS THE SOUND OF HEAVY-DUTY NEXT-GENERATION METAL TITANS TAKING OUT A LEGION OF SUPERFREAKS IN A 3-D APOCALYPSE OF WEAPON-LOVING COSMIC COMBAT. THIS IS THE SOUND OF TWO UNIVERSES COLLIDING. THIS IS HEAVY METAL.

From Marvel...Iron Man.

From Acclaim Comics...X-O Manowar.

From every other dark hole in the universe... the greatest super villain threat the world has ever seen, the combined evil might of Baron Zemo, General Krytos, and the sinister Mistress Crescendo, not to mention Zemo's old cronies, The Masters of Evil and more deadly Spider Aliens than you can shake an Ion Cannon at!

It's a race against time as our heroes seek to obtain the infinitely powerful Cosmic Cube before the bad guys do! Whoever has the mysterious red cube controls reality itself! If Iron Man and X-O Manowar fail their mission this time the universe is doomed!

But all is far from lost! They've still got their armor!

A Team-Up this great deserves a game this great!

HEAVY METAL brings killer 3-D rendered, motion-captured graphics to a new level of awesome realism and warps you through seven blistering levels of armor-plated, high octane apocalypse-- you've never seen superheroes like this!

Welcome to Iron Man/X-O Manowar: Heavy Metal. Ground zero for a new generation of superhero gaming.

Game Play

This is a side-scroller from the 8-bit era converted straight to the PC without enhancements. You get to play Iron Man or X-O Manowar, two almost identical superheros, who fight exactly the same way with beams of red and yellow power. The hero can either move left to right or right to left blasting away at the bad guys.

Plot

X-O Manowar gets to fight his greatest foe Crescendo and Iron Man gets to fight Baron Zemo, a truely evil guy. Essentially Iron Man and X-O Manowar have the task to stop the two villians from collecting the broken pieces of a Cosmic Cube, aka Rock of Reality (Why not Bolder of Balm - Ed.). This magical mineral deposit will confer ultimate power to the evil duo. You also get to fight Crescendo'w Spider Aliens.

You will also see Marvel Comics' masters of evil, including Yellow Jacket, Absorbing , Melter, Titania, Goliath, Mr. Hyde, Arnim Zola, Blackout and Baron Zemo; and Acclaim Comics' Mistress Cresendo, Crescendo's Vizier, General Krytos, Dromak Gladiator, Armorines and Spider Aliens.

Graphics

The graphics are uninspired with boring backgrounds. Object scaling and rotation techniques yield incredibly realistic visual depth on two dimensional backgrounds of surprisingly little detail. Variable lighting effects set the tone for each battle sequence.

Animation

This game uses really primitive with four frame animation. The characters can move, punch, kick, fly, and shoot.
