Like all the other HP printers, the DeskJet 400 is easy to use and produces some very impressive output. Roughly 7 x 6 inches in dimension, with a 50 page sheet feeder, the printer will take up little desk space. The case is an attrative departure from the DeskJet 600 and 600C printers that it will replace. Does not have the special envelope feeder or double sided printing seen with other 600 and 800 series printers.
Resolution on the new printer is a high 600x300 dots-per-inch (dpi) while still printing at 3 pages per minute (ppm) in black draft quality (150x300), 2 ppm in letter quality (600x300), and 4- 7 minutes per page for color graphics. The easy to replace sanp in color cartridge, prints easily, does not clog after hours of use, and prints in 256 levels of enhanced greyscale or up to 16.7 million colors with ColorSmart technology for color matching.
Other new features include faster return from printing for both single and multiple pages, lower power consumption at rest and while printing than the printers it is replacing. The HP DeskJet 400 represents powerful, if slow, printing for a reasonable price.
